A lifetime nail biter, I’m always looking for something to give my fingertips a fighting chance. Many say that diet will help strengthen your nails from within, but the Mayo Clinic assures that most Americans already get enough protein to maximize the strength you can develop naturally.

That said, if you are looking to make yours as hard as metal nails, start with a coat of Barielle’s Nail Rebuilding Protein (Ulta, $17.50). It works as a base coat and bonds the layers of the keratin to fortify them.

After you have applied a colored lacquer, use Nutra Nail Chip Proof Strengthening Top Coat (Walgreens, $4.29). It’s an acrylic coat that will keep your color vivid and your nails from chipping.

And when your nails do chip, file them down with Burton’s Crystal Files (www.CrystalFiles.com, sizes vary). They produce a cleaner edge than emery boards and metal files, and because their surface is glass, you can wash away dangerous bacteria with ease.
