That splash of cerulean, it captures you – The Pacific, a lapping, lavish salutation. The way it cradles the resort, celebrating this coveted coast of ours, cresting majestically at The Montage Laguna Beach. Beneath a canvas umbrella overlooking the sea, we toast. Glasses full of award winning libations, the ocean appearing as if someone might have stained it sapphire, it’s a party, just sitting here.

Poolside lunch still watering in our mouths, two chaises are set up for our relaxing pleasure, Courtney’s and mine. The ocean in front of us, pool behind, it’s gorgeous out, crisp and 70. And November no less. No wonder they come in droves.

And no longer can we resist the lure of Spa Montage – with it’s banana palms waving a seaside breeze over the private waterfall whirlpool, lounge chairs, a secluded spot you could settle into for a month, easy. What they feature here is The Art of Spa. This was new to both of us. It’s a regiment of three; warmth, followed by cold-plunge, followed by wrapped relaxation (the terry robe in your locker works perfectly). This circuit improves circulation, digestion, and the clincher, burns mad calories. The warm cedar embrace of the sauna? Wonderful. The soothing eucalyptus of the steam? Invigorating. The cold plunge? Painful. But it only lasts a second. And oddly enough, you feel accomplished when you’re through. We enjoyed the challenge. And the most extravagant means of calorie burning I’ve ever achieved. Lord knows.

After a quick shower following our Art of Spa triathlon, I was ready for my facial. Using a combination of Eminence and Spa Technologies products, Lyndsey delivered on those magical words, “you will feel a difference after today’s treatment.” And even if I didn’t leave aglow, the sensory experience would have produced the same effect. The Eucalyptus Cleansing Concentrate, Sweet Red Rose Cleanser, Pear and Poppy Seed Microderm Polisher, Apricot Whip Moisturizer? As I was being cleansed, hydrated, and exfoliated, I was treated to a fruit salad of phenomenal facial product. Cucumber eye gel, Citrus lip balm, and Honeydew Body Lotion? Go if only to be bathed by nature’s finest. It feels as good as it tastes. It smells even better.

Days later, the braille that formerly graced my forehead was gone, and everything from cheekbones to chin was smoothed out, as promised. Just because you live in California doesn’t mean you don’t deserve your day at the beach. Take yours straight down to Laguna, where The Art of Spa is but one more contributor to the art of living mastered so beautifully at The Montage Laguna Beach.

These days, there are a handful of options on the menu at any given nail salon. If you break it down though, there are only two types of manicures we really want ““ “a Quickie” so-to-speak or “an Escape.”

More often than not, we just need to get in, get lacquered and get on our way.

Other times, we just need to get away. Let us sit back, ignore our iPhones and remain physically unable to be any place else – for at least an hour.

For these occasions, make an appointment at Feve’s Manicure Affair in the valley. Adorned with draping fabrics, dim lighting, candlelight and cabanas ““ it’s almost hard to remember you’re just steps away from the busy boulevard.

There’s a bar-style station complete with leather stools for those who like to socialize mid-manicure, as well as separate lounges and cabanas for those who need more solitary pampering (yes please). Feve’s boasts The Manly-Cure specifically for male customers, a mani-pedi for children 12 & under and a unique setting to host private gatherings.

And listen up ladies…

Every week, Feve’s hosts Mommy Sundays and Ladies Night Thursdays.
On Sundays, women are invited to book services and bring the little ones along. Children can explore the toy box, listen to a Feve’s storybook reader and be entertained by an on-hand childcare professional while mom gets pampered.

Why waste precious weekend minutes in the nail salon when every Thursday, Feve’s stays open late for ladies night. Go, sit back, have a drink and get polished with the girls. And unlike at yoga, they don’t frown upon chatting with neighbors.

The Milk and Honey is pretty close to mani/pedi heaven, but check out http://feves.net for the complete list of services.

Established 2003.">Tweet

Yeah, we have our traffic and “fire season” in LA”¦ We’ve even had our share of earthquakes lately. But, nothing beats a west coast summer. Sundresses and flip flops take us day to evening. Barely-there to vibrant makeup passes as appropriate. Even the spas are boasting roses.

The spa is one of a few places where we actually indulge indoors during the summer. Three of our favorite BNLA-approved spots are offering special body treatments worth spending a few hours inside this month”¦

African Red Tea Body Cocktail at Ole Henriksen Face/Body

First off, we have to pay homage to the parking situation at Ole Henriksen ““ quite possibly the simplest in the city, which induces calm in itself.

As for the African Red Tea Body Cocktail, it feels as if you’re on some remote island being slathered by the local shaman. Whether it’s the healing properties of the African Red Tea, Rosa Damascena (rose flower extract), detox affects of the painted-on yogurt, or the tangy oranges squeezed onto your body, you’ll come out healed.

The exotic 1½ hour treatment includes an organic brown sugar body scrub and tropical rain rinse, fresh oranges, an anti-oxidant exfoliating/toning mask made from yogurt and African Red Tea and a warm wrap to release the active ingredients.

The only advice we’d offer is that if you’re at all shy, make sure to request your esthetician in accordance.

Ole Henriksen Face/Body
8622 A Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles CA 90069
http://www.olehenriksen.com

The Chocolate and Rose Body Treatment at Ona Spa

Ona, meaning all things good, stays true to its name with their Chocolate and Rose Body Treatment. It’s like Valentine’s Day found its way to the summer. And Ona Spa.

Decadent aromas and textures of chocolate and roses are swept over your entire body to nurture, calm, and soothe. A full body exfoliation from organic cocoa powder and Aloe is followed by a jasmine and rose essential oil wrap, mixed in with the occasional organic chocolate treat ““ appealing to all of your newly awakened senses.

Petals Body Treatment at Ojai Valley Inn & Spa

A bit north of LA is one of our favorite haunts ““ The Ojai Spa. Yes, we know we’ve mentioned it before, but to do a rose story and not give props to this signature spa treatment just didn’t seem right.

The Petals Body Treatment uses pure rose oil to repair and rejuvenate skin, bring balance to the endocrine system, and soothe the feminine spirit.

Guests choose one of four roses, which are ultimately added to body butter and showered onto skin”¦
- Red ““ Passion/ commitment/ going for it
- White ““ Blissful surrender/ receptivity/ freedom
- Yellow ““ Joy/ enthusiasm/ friendship
- Pink ““ self-love/ slowing down/ future

Hot towels are placed inside a cocoon wrap to infuse the essence of petals, while guests can lie in meditative silence or pick from a bowl of mantras to be recited.

The Petals Body Treatment is said to bring our bodies and hearts into balance, as well as strengthen our feminine assets of wisdom, grace and beauty.

Or rather, kiss my feet…with fish. They’re called Asian Fish, Doctor Fish and Kissing Fish, though some call them, Eeoowww…Fish! (oh, get over it) The real name is Gara Rufa fish and they’re the latest trend in spa treatments.

The fish, which thrive in warm water, love your dead skin and happily nibble it away while you leisurely keep your feet in a clean, warm water bath. The claim is that they’re a wonderful alternative to expensive, and in some states illegal, razor cutting or filing of the dead skin on our feet. Additionally, the treatment is said to be good for psoriasis and eczema. You can immerse your whole body and let the fish picnic on all your unwanted dry skin, but so far, most places have tanks only large enough for feet and hands.

It’s quite a popular trend all over Asia, and a friend of mine who lives in Manila, likes to go to the doctor fish spa with his family. Above is a shot of the foot of his 10 year old son, Sam, enjoying it. Here in the US, smaller fish are used, but in Asia, customers are given choices of tanks which hold fish of different sizes and you can move from tank to tank.

As of now, there are only a few spas around the US that offer the doctor fish and none in NYC yet. At a recent Spa convention I had the opportunity to sample the experience on my hand. After removing jewelry, disinfecting and washing my hand, I immersed it in the tank and as soon as I did, the dozens of fish immediately swarmed around and started nibbling away. It was a pleasant, tickling sensation and I’m told that when feet are “kissed”, many go from giggling to hysterical fits of laughter depending on how ticklish they are.

I had it, my friends had it and none of us knew what to do about it. It was so frustrating. We starved ourselves to be rail thin, and still it was there. I even consulted my doctor at the time, who told me in a condescending voice, “what are you so worried about, there is no cure, and besides you’re already married.” At that moment, I was determined to get to the bottom of things, quite literally, myself.

After years of immersing myself in research and collaborating with doctors, scientists, and working with physical therapists from here and abroad, I discovered methods that actually helped to treat, fight and even prevent cellulite. I am proud to say that at 64, I have better legs than I did at 25. I have helped thousands of women achieve similar success as well. Don’t get me wrong, I am not claiming to have found a magic cure for cellulite, not YET, but I have found solutions that work to help diminish that unsightly orange peel skin condition that 90-98% of women have.

My efforts and results have earned me quite the reputation in the press over the years. I have been named the “Cellulite Exorcist Extraordinaire” by Vogue and “THE anti-cellulite maven” by W Magazine. I have been interviewed on “The Today Show”, “Good Morning America”, and “Regis” to name a few. My cellulite programs have been featured in international beauty and fashion magazines such as: Vogue, Allure, Cosmopolitan, and Harper’s Bazaar. But my greatest achievement is my 5-Week Intensive Cellulite Program, which encompasses multiple modalities of cutting edge technology, individually tailored lifestyle regimens, and carefully formulated products that target the problem. Here are a few tips from my program (and a few secrets) that I live by and which really work:

1. Absolutely no fried, processed, or salty foods ever!

2. Limit simple carbohydrates (white flour, white sugar); opt for the complex carbohydrates instead like: fruits, vegetables, grains, and foods rich in fiber. I love raspberries: they are sweet, delicious, and loaded with fiber.

3. Products that claim fat free and/or sugar free are usually loaded with chemicals. Skip both regular and diet sodas altogether. Perrier with lime is as refreshing and much more healthful.

4. Avoid mixed drinks; reach for a glass of red wine instead (in moderation of course).

5. Get moving! Any kind of regular exercise from dancing to swimming to yoga to a brisk walk, or a combination of multiple things will increase your metabolism. Never commit to any exercise that you do not enjoy. You will never succeed, because eventually you will give it up. Choose something you love to do, experiment, shop around, and I guarantee you will find a fun activity that makes you feel great both during and after. Remember, it is after 20 minutes of exercise when your body really begins to burn the calories. Visit my website at www.anushkaonline for some very effective, targeted exercises that you can do at home.
