Bi-Coastal Styling
By Courtney Kretchman
Sometimes we’re spoiled in Los Angeles. OK, often. Mostly we just like things the way we like them. Not high-maintenance, just high standards. We see the difference. Take the artists who handle our hair care. If we’re going to be stereotyped as “The City of Blonde,” then it better be the best blonde. And sometimes, the best need to be flown in.
Sean James Decuers, a stylist from the Rita Hazan Salon in New York, now makes his way out west every six(ish) weeks. Sean James encourages us to push the envelope with our hair, but happily obliges when we just want a good old fashion trim. He gets us.
“My job allows me to express my creativity and really be myself, which in turn helps me become a better artist and a stronger business man. Everyday is something new – anything can happen – it’s that energy and element of surprise that drives me,” says Sean James.

Inspired at a young age by New Orleans’ salons and clubs of the time, hair came naturally to him. Eventually moving to the west coast, Sean James worked at Vidal Sassoon and the Yosh Fahar Salon. Moving to New York was next on his agenda and he continued learning and growing under famed salons Bumble and Bumble, Oribe and Warren Tricomi. Currently sponsored by Garnier Fructis as their celebrity hairstylist worldwide, Sean James has worked on a variety of high-profile celebrities and is in seasonal demand for New York Fashion Week.
Notable clients include Jennie Garth, Rachel Leigh Cook, Bianca Trump and Natasha Henstridge. To book an appointment for his next LA visit, contact Angela@ritahazansalon.com. $250, styling /blow dry.

Two other east coast mane artists make regular stops in LA for appointments.
Gina Gilbert, a colorist who specializes in brunettes with sun kissed ends, regularly cares for the tresses of Faith Hill, Drew Barrymore and Julianne Moore. Single Process – $150, Highlights $300 and up

Harry Josh, a stylist and colorist, is known for the “Californian highlights” of Gisele Bundchen, Ellen Pompeo and Christy Turlington. It only makes sense to visit and pay homage to the coast where these wavy strands were inspired. Cut – $400, Highlight – $500, Single Process $200
