Los Angeles always has something new to offer for the adventure-seekers and outdoor-workout enthusiasts. While some gym rats get the endorphin rush from seeing the “calories burned” number on the treadmill, there are some who wake up at the crack of dawn to get an exhilarating Runyon Canyon hike before heading into work. The locals have noticed a new and expanding group of pretty faces in the past months: Jenna Phillips’ Mission Possible. The practice has become more popular recently, as students are looking to feel the burn in a group atmosphere, outside the walls of a gym.

Jenna Phillips is a personal trainer, certified pilates and spinning instructor, who has taught at some of the most elite studios in Los Angeles, where she retained several celebrity clients. But above all of her qualifications, Jenna has an enthusiasm and radiating positive energy so that her Mission Possible “agents” feel motivated to work at achieving their individual fitness goals. Phillips leads Mission Possible classes two days a week at the Santa Monica stairs for the West LA crowd, and one session a week at Runyon Canyon for the eastsiders.
The class at Runyon Canyon starts on the difficult trail, with breaks every so often for abs, arm, and legwork. As the sun is rising and students absorb the breathtaking views, pain somehow morphs into a more zen-like state. Toward the end of the hike, Phillips leads the group to the deserted tennis court where they alternate between jumping rope and arm work with resistance bands – using the last ounces of energy before the cool down to conduct line drills. Everyone is able to get to know each other and bond during the workout because classes are kept to a maximum of 10 people.
Phillips doles out her healthy eating advice and everyone shares the items that top their grocery list at Trader Joe’s. And, for those who are too busy toweling off to jot down Jenna’s valuable advice, she has written a downloadable book available on her website. Entitled “30 Days in the Life of Jenna Phillips: Moderation vs. Deprivation“, the book includes a meal plan and recipes for healthy and fulfilling whole foods. Spoiler alert: Trader Joe’s egg white salad is a huge hit, high in protein and low in calories.
