For a tough-talking, no-frills New Yorker (and a brunette one at that), Rita Hazan is an unlikely candidate for best bottle blonde job; however, her client roster would suggest otherwise. From Jessica Simpson and Joss Stone to Jennifer Lopez and Brooke Shields, Rita tranforms tinseltown’s most famous locks. The reigning queen of color has even made it to “O” status (and by “O” we mean, “Oh my god, she’s been on Oprah!”)

And just how does Rita “give good blonde?” Aside from one’s personality, Rita attributes skin tone as a major factor in choosing which shade best suites each individual.
More in demand than ever with a burgeoning clientele on the West Coast, Rita is taking her act on the road, annointing Angelenos with monthly visits to the Cristophe Salon in Beverly Hills. Rita tells BeautyNews how to choose the perfect shade of blonde.
Olive Skin
Women with olive skin tone should stay away from reds and colors that are too blonde. Warm colors are fine, but nothing too dramatic or it won’t work. Chocolate, chestnut, honey blonde and toffee are the best shades for this skin tone.
Celebrity matches: Jennifer Lopez, Vanessa Marcil and Jennifer Esposito

Fair Skin
Fair skin friends should stay within the blonde to light brown range. The color should be warm and can be as light as a light golden blonde. Light golden brown, buttery blonde and caramel are the best shades.
Celebrity matches: Jessica Simpson and Carmen Electra

Pale Skin
If you have pale skin, you can go as light as baby blonde. If there is red in your skin, the color can leans more towards a strawberry blonde. Baby blonde, strawberry blonde, auburn and dark honey blonde are your best choices.
Celebrity matches: Ashlee Simpson, Jaimie Pressley and Joss Stone

“A good rule of thumb is to always stay away from extreme colors,” says Rita. “If your hair is breaking from trying to be too blonde, odds are you shouldn’t be!”
