Carved out of Stone
By Eva Leume
Eastsiders no longer fret. Rather than fighting traffic to get to the holy grail of dayspas and beauty treatment centers along the domain of Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, now residents west of Fairfax need look no further than the hills of Los Feliz for a relaxing and as the name implies de-toxifying retreat.
Dtox Dayspa embodies all that you would imagine from Eastside innovators – modern, minimal and most important nowadays - green. Founders Kenneth King and Cary Mock set out to create a dayspa for men and women to experience the luxury of a dayspa without all the fluff. A particularly good environment for men and women intimidated by the thought of old school beauticians armed with perfumey potions and stacks of glossy fashion magazines.

King and Mock designed a space that is modern and natural, with quiet thoughtful spaces decorated in natural woods and abstract murals. The space is separated into a men’s spa and a women’s spa - each equipped with dry saunas and steam rooms that are joined by a common relaxation room and individual treatment rooms. Classical music and natural sounds are piped throughout the spa with the surround sound to encourage a refuge from blackberries, sidekicks and cell phones.
The founders have even poached talent from the top Angeleno spas. Aesthetician expert and veteran Rene Rutledge comes to Dtox Dayspa armed with a signature treatment for the Spa – the Organic Hydrating Facial - a 4-layer mask process using all organic and natural products. Beginning with a seaweed serum, followed by an organic hydrating crème massage, Rutledge then applies a unique layering of textures: a rubberized mask of seaweed to firm and a mineral mask, which is self-heating that dries to a clay. The process of removal is remarkable and makes one feel truly carved out of stone, leaving the face as pure and flawless as a Greek statue. It is a treatment suitable for both Adonis AND Venus alike.
