Murad Medical Spa
By Denise Dumars
When Dr. Murad says I have no wrinkles, I am inclined to believe him. Murad is one of the area’s most renowned experts on skincare. He started the Murad Medical Spa in El Segundo, California, a full-service spa serving skin and body. The masseuses are dressed tastefully and the waiting room is chic in an understated way. It is an elegant, tranquil oasis to relax and receive luxurious spa treatments. Murad is where you go when you really want high-performance spa treatments for your skin and body. You will not be disappointed.
I’ve been to the Murad Spa many times, which is a testament to their adept massage therapists. The last time I visited, my masseuse was named Francine and she was extremely familiar with and adept at treating my particular problems: RSI and fibromyalgia. I received an hour massage on a heated table, with soft music playing in the dimly lit room. Before the massage, I had changed clothes in the women’s locker room, which is stocked with all sorts of Murad products available for the massage clients to use. There is also a dry sauna in the women’s locker room. I highly recommend sitting in the sauna for five minutes before getting a massage and ten minutes the treatment.
I began my visit by meeting the spa representatives at the front desk. They were wearing their chic black uniforms that made them look like a cross between dermatology clinicians and stylists at a top salon. This makes sense since Dr. Murad runs his dermatology clinic on the fifth floor of a building nearby. All of the treatment products are in the posh reception area, along with explanations of treatment benefits. There is no makeup in the spa because Dr. Murad wants to focus on skin treatments rather than cosmetics. After all, beautiful, healthy-looking skin is the best beauty secret there is.
At the other end of the reception area there is a line of aromatherapy products from Thailand that Dr. Murad uses. Aromatherapy is a great way to enhance your well being and complement the mood-enhancing benefits of spa treatments.
Thick, Egyptian cotton robes are on hand for clients receiving spa treatments. The treatment waiting room with great beverages like ice water infused with fresh lemons and oranges, hot herbal tea, fruit, and a treasure trove of glossy magazines.
The treatments here are quite reasonable in cost considering the quality of the services. Dr. Murad’s products are pretty well-priced as well for such high-quality skin care from the top dermatologist in the field.
They do not rush you in and out at the spa, which I find refreshing. You can hang out in the sauna as long as you like and can take a spa shower. You can drink all spa beverages you want. Also you can try out all of the fabulous skin treatment products before you buy them.
Dr. Murad has a thriving dermatology practice and is known as one of the world’s leading authorities on skin care. His two books: Wrinkle-Free Forever and The Cellulite Solution explain how some tough physical problems related to appearance often have internal origins. In fact, the supplements are the one product that I am most likely to stick with in my skin care regime.
After my visit to the spa, I was treated to a workup at Dr. Murad’s skin care clinic. I was tested for water in my cells. I was diagnosed as having properly hydrated skin, which might be the reason Dr. Murad proclaimed that I have no wrinkles. However, he and his clinical assistant did notice I have a little bit puffiness in the ankles and in my upper eyelids due to water retention. In other words, the theory that Dr. Murad’s Water Principle theory is not just about how much water you drink or have in your system. It is about how well your system uses water. Puffy ankles and puffy eyelids are indications that your tissues are not metabolizing water as well as they could. This is a natural part of aging which we strive to counteract. This is why I believe that internal skin care, the name of which Dr. Murad has trademarked, is so very important. Many products work topically; however, if you really want to see an improvement in your skin on a large-scale, you need to watch the way you eat and drink and supplement your diet with vitamins. Dr. Murad’s clinician also suggested that I make sure to exercise, and suggested that I lose just a teeny bit of weight. Well, this was nothing new to me and I agreed. They also warned me that I was at risk for osteoporosis and advised me to take 1500 mg of calcium, in powder or liquid form, per day.
I also asked Dr. Murad about my rosacea. I have been using some of his products in the Redness and Sensitivity line. I asked whether he felt that I should have laser treatment or some other treatment for my rosacea. He looked at my skin carefully and said no. He felt that supplements and skin care, diet, and exercise would take care of the problem. This response made me respect Dr. Murad even more. Clearly, he was not trying to sell me an expensive treatment that he did not feel was necessary. I’m not sure there are too many other dermatologists out there who would have reacted that way.
At Murad, you get useful treatment and without overselling or pseudoscience. It is a place where your skin and body problems will be taken seriously. I highly recommend the massage technicians at this spa for the deep, relaxing massage you crave. The clinicians will understand how to treat your condition, however severe you think it may be. You will not be given a one-size-fits-all massage or facial here. I feel that the Murad Medical Spa is one of the very best spas anyone could visit for serious skin treatments. Similarly, if you want a massage that really helps decrease pain, tension, or stiffness you will want to visit the Murad Medical Spa as well.
I found several products beneficial in Dr. Murad’s various lines of skin care products. I also enjoyed reading his skin care books that explain how to combat aging, wrinkles and cellulite. His main premise is that good skin care comes from the inside as well as the outside. I highly recommend both of the books to Beauty News LA readers. I’m already planning my next visit to the Murad Spa. I was so thrilled when, Dr. Murad himself said to me, “You have no wrinkles.” Now that’s a diagnosis that is music to my ears.
The Murad Spa offers a variety of different massages including Swedish massage, Shiatsu, Sports/Deep Tissue massage, Reflexology, Prenatal massage, lymphatic drainage, and many more. The pamphlet encourages the visitor to inquire about additional modalities as well. The Murad Spa is incredibly accommodating to peoples’ physical and skincare needs.
Murad also offers signature facials like the Environmental Shield Vitamin C Infusion Facial. Other salon services such as scalp treatments, hairstyling, and nail care are also available. Spa Packages can include both facial and massage treatments. The “Get Started” and “City Escape” packages are a great way to treat yourself to some serious skincare and pampering.
